Moving and Grooving in Yoga Space
For most people, the idea of choosing a new yoga class instantly stirs up emotions. Anticipating the prospect of learning something new excites the adventurous. But sadly, and probably more often for the unadventurous the emotion is fear!
Those who’ve never attended a yoga class think, “What if the yoga instructor makes me wrap my leg around my head while whistling?” Or, some think, “I’m so out of shape I couldn’t possibly do yoga.”
Those are just three of a never-ending list that when fear enters in can go on and on.
So, fear and embarrassment aside, if you had to, how would you choose a yoga class that fits you?
A good place to start is to throw all thought away — I repeat: “THROW ALL THOUGHT AWAY,” because there is a place for a beginners to start a journey into yoga.
Recently, I attended a yoga class called the Yoga Space at Lifetime Fitness Athletic in Syosset. The Yoga Space sets the scene with beautiful music and lighting.
When all the students are in and have laid down their mats – class begins.
At the start of the class, the yoga teacher guides students through yoga poses verbally twice. Then, by the third time, the instructor allows students to use the steps to guide themselves.
Personally, I take direction very well, so once the instructor gave the class permission to let go and flow on our own I was surprised.
First I thought, “What! I have to direct myself? What do I do if I forget the steps?”
Then, after I got over my fear, I was amazed that the best part of the experience was being allowed to be myself and to feel any and all the emotions I felt.
That’s why, if fear about attending a new yoga class pops up, Yoga Space makes moving through that fear become easier. Instead of feeling uncomfortable, there is an atmosphere of excitement, which bubbles up as you move and groove. Amazingly, after a short time, the initial embarrassment takes a back seat because everyone in the class is in their own flow and no one is on the same beat. So, fitting in or making the wrong move is no longer a concern.
In the end, the sweetest thing of all was just showing up at the Yoga Space – and if I did, so can you.
